What will you carry in your ‘suruku pai’?

The traditional “Suruku Pai” was a small drawstring pouch, fashioned out of checkered and striped fabric remnants. It once was every Tamil granny’s prized possession, for it contained her personal stash of betel leaves, nuts, some money and other precious bits and bobs.
The first ‘handbag’ has since then undergone a bit of a makeover and has returned with tassels and bells, in wild shades of peacock blue, panjumittai pink, parrot green etc. From Madurai to Mumbai, Bollywood and beyond the trend has travelled and in its chic new avatar, the Suruku Pai is the prefect little bag to hold your phone, keys, coins, makeup, trinkets and sentimental somethings…
